NORTH STREET (west side), Ipplepen
No. 15 (formerly listed as 2 cottages on south-west side of street third below "Greenhill"

GV
II

Small house. Probably circa late C16. C18/C19 outshut. Rendered rubble walls.
Thatched roof ½ hipped at either end. 2 projecting rendered rubble stacks, 1 at the
left and 1 lateral one at the front.
2-room plan with central passage, parlour to the left and hall/kitchen heated by
front lateral stack; larger to the right formerly appears to have had newel
staircase at the rear of this room . The other room is heated by a gable end stack.
Possibly late C18/early C19 outshut at rear of larger room.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front. All mid C20 metal frame 2-light casements
except for first floor right-hand window which is circa early C20 blockwood door to
left of centre under slate porch hood. The chimneystack is to its right with a
semicircular oven projection beyond it.
Interior: The left-hand room has a chamfered half-beam at the end wall with hollow
step stops. Later fireplace. The doorway to this room from the passage has a
square-headed wooden doorframe, chamfered with worn hollow step stops. The right-
hand room has a central cross-beam which is chamfered and rests on a wooden corbel
at the front, stops not visible. At the far end is a half beam, chamfered with
hollow step stops. The wooden fireplace lintel is chamfered with either run-out or
worn stops; stone oven in the left-hand side.
The original roof trusses appear to survive, their feet appear in the first floor
rooms, plastered over, but there is no roof access. They are very substantial,
apparently straight principals, with threaded purlins and what appears to be a
morticed collar.
