Nos. 19, 21 and 23 (formerly listed as Nos. 1, 2 & 3 North End Cottages)

3 cottages, formerly farmhouse. Circa late C16/eariy C17, divided probably in C19,
extended in late C20. Rendered rubble walls with gable ended asbestos slate roof,
slate roof to extension. 3 large rendered rubble stacks. 2 gable end stacks
(left-hand one enclosed by extension) the right-hand one projects with offsets.
Projecting lateral stack at front of house.
Originally 3-room and through-passage plan with lower and inner rooms heated by
gable end stacks and lateral stack to front of hall. Divided into cottages
probably in C19. Late C20 1-room plan extension at left end.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window front. No. 19 to right has C20 3-light casement
with 'leaded' panes on first floor and 2-light early C20 casement on ground floor
with early C20 plank door to its left. C19 3-light casement to the left of door.
No. 21 at the centre has on first floor 3-light circa early C20 casement to left of
centre and similar 4-light window to right of centre. On ground floor the stack
projects at the centre with a very small window in its right-hand side. To the left
of the stack is a 3-light early C20 casement. To the right of the stack is a C20
single fixed light. Beyond it is C19 wide panelled door to the original passage
under slate porch hood. No. 23 to the left has a 3-light C19 casement to the left
on the first floor with a similar window on the ground floor and a C20 part glazed
door to its right under a slate porch hood. Late C20 1-room extension to the far
left. All windows except in extension have glazing bars. At rear is C19/20 outshut
to no. 19 and rectangular stair projection behind no. 21.
Interior of no. 21 inspected which incorporates passage and hall of original house.
The hall fireplace has wooden lintel with narrow chamfer which is partially filled
in below on either side. C17 plank and muntin screen at higher end of hall has
beaded edges to muntins and head beam. Wooden newel stairs at rear of hall. 2
original roof trusses survive in poor condition - a new roof has been put on top.
They consist of substantial straight principals, morticed at the apex with threaded
purlins. The collars are halved onto the trusses with notched dovetail joints.
