Details
SX 8366 IPPLEPEN NORTH STREET (east side), Ipplepen 6/144 Brooke House (No. 40) - GV II House, formerly probably farmhouse. C17 considerably remodelled and extended in circa 1830. C19 wing. Stucco walls probably over limestone rubble. Gable ended asbestos slate roof. 3 rubble stacks, left-hand gable end one is exposed stone, axial and right-hand gable stacks are rendered. Rendered brick gable end stack to rear wing. Originally 3-room and through passage plan heated lower to right and inner room both heated by gable end stacks. Remodelled in circa 1830s when the lower end was probably extended to accommodate a stairhall and the 2 principal rooms; the larger to lower left end and smaller to the right but still on the lower side of the original hall stack. The service rooms are accommodated idn the original hall and inner room. Parallel block at rear of lower end added either then or slightly later in C19. 2 storeys. 6-window front with symmetrical 3-window bay to left of circa 1830 2- light casements with Gothic Y-tracery and arched lights. 2-storey porch at the centre has below the window a pointed arched doorway with contemporary part glazed double doors which have simple Gothic tracery. To the right is a further 3-window bay to the service end which has contemporary triangular headed 2-light casements. Moulded cast iron gutter with lion head masks. Interior: inaccessible at time of survey but windows to 2 principal rooms have contemporary shutters which are panelled with Gothic tracery pattern repeating that of the windows. A good quality C19 staircase may survive. This house is a good example of the way in which many C17 houses were remodelled in the C19. The quality of the C19 work is, however, particularly good in this example and the facade, which has survived intact, is very attractive with its Gothic fenestration.
