Details

SX 86 NW BROADHEMPSTON BROADHEMPSTON 2/75 Ashwood and Ashwood Cottage - GV II 2 cottages, originally one house. Circa early C16, altered in C17, extended and converted into 2 cottages probably in C18. Rendered rubble and cob walls, exposed at rear of Ashwood Cottage. Asbestos slate roof with gable ends. Rendered rubble axial stack to Ashwood and similar originally lateral stack to Ashwood cottage. Rendered brick gable stack to Ashwood and small rendered possibly rubble gable stack to Ashwood cottage. Originally 3 room and through-passage house, probably with hall at least open to the roof, jettied chamfers over inner room and lower room/passage may or may not be original. Hall ceiled in early C17 when front lateral fireplace was added. Galbe end fireplace to inner room. Extended at higher end and probably converted into 2 cottages at that time, divided at the upper end of the hall. Probably C19 outshut added at the front of Ashwood Cottage. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical front. Ashwood Cottage projects at the right-hand side. Ashwood to the left has 3 window front of probably early C20 1, 2 and 3-light casements on first floor with small panes. On ground floor is similar C19 2-light window at centre with C20 2-light casement to right and single light to far left. To left of centre the wall is recessed slightly and there is C20 panelled door under gabled porch. Outshut against left gable end. Ashwood cottage has C19 outshut built against front wall with 3 windows. Left-hand window is early C19 16-pane hornless sash. To its right is small C20 fixed light with single light C20 casement to far right. C20 stable door to right of centre. Single storey C20 extension to right of outshut. Interior of Ashwood, formerly inner room, has longitudinal beam, chamfered with ogee stops. In roof above inner room is 1 original truss with curved feet, possibly a jointed cruck. It has a cambered mortices collar with threaded purlins and is not smoke-blackened. Ashwood cottage has a C16 plank and muntin screen at the higher end of the hall with chamfered muntins and mason's mitres to the head-beam above. The base has rotted. According to the owner there is a concealed internal jetty above the screen consisting of projecting joists. The hall ceiling has 2 substantial chamfered cross beams with hollow step stops. To either side of the upper beam are similarly decorated joists. At the lower beam the ceiling level drops and it is likely that this is another internal jetty. The decorated joists formerly continued across the passage and there was probably another screen at the lower side of the passage. The former lower room has 2 cross beams, the upper one of which is chamfered with ogee stops. In the former outside wall of the lower room at the front are 2 blocked 2- light wooden mullion windows.
