Details
SX 96 NW COFFINSWELL DACCOMBE 4/103 The Old Forge - GV II House, originally formed larger house with adjoining property, then divided off and had forge added at one end. Forge has since been converted into accommodation. Original part late C16/early C17 forge added possibly in C18, modernised in late C20. Rendered cob walls to original house part, former forge is rendered sandstone. Gable ended asbestos slate roof, on lower level over forge. 2 rear lateral stack with brick shafts, right-hand one (to original house part) is a large rendered stone stack. The original (left-hand) part to this house initially formed the inner room to the adjoining property. Due to modernisation it is difficult to assess when the forge was added but it was possibly in the C18 and it is likely that the property was divided from the adjoining one at this stage. Forge apparently converted in later C20. At present 2 principal heated rooms on ground floor with outshut at front of right-hand room. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front, 2 windows on ground floor. C20 2-light casements with glazing bars on first, floor to far right is single light. Ground floor windows are 3-light to left end, 4-lights to right, similar to the others. C20 plank and glazed door to their left. Outshut built onto front of forge to the right. Interior inaccessible at time of survey but believed to have been extensively modernised in C20.
