Details

SX 96 NW COFFINSWELL DACCOMBE 4/106 Appleacre (formerly listed as - Kingswell) including adjoining cob wall to south-west GV II House, formerly farmhouse. C16, altered in C17, reputedly converted at 1 stage into 3 cottages, considerably modernised in C20. Rendered cob walls. Thatched roof, half hipped at left end, gabled to right. Lateral brick chimney shaft at rear of left end, gable brick stack at right end. 3 room and through/cross passage plan, originally open to the roof, with central hearth, at least over lower room to right and hall. Ceiled probably in early C17 with lateral stack added at rear of hall and gable stack to lower room. Newel staircase added at rear of hall adjoiniong fireplace. Plan considerably altered subsequently, stairs now open out of passage which may not be in original position, size of hall and inner room changed. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front, 6 windows on ground floor. C20 1, 2 and 3- light casements with leaded panes all in fairly small openings. First floor window right of centre probably incorporates C18 leaded glass. First floor windows are set back in the thickness of the wall. C20 plank door at centre. At rear is central projection incorporating lateral stack to the right (with shaft taken down) with rounded oven projection beyond it which has thatched roof. To the left of the stack is rectangular stair projection which has a 2-light wood mullioned window (chamfered on the inside. To the left of the stair projection on first floor is a similar 2- light wood mullioned window. Interior: Hall fireplace has chamfered wooden lintel with straight cut stops. On the front of the lintel a ship has been roughly carved. 2 cross beams (one now in passage) chamfered with hollow step stops. Wooden newel staircase. The roof trusses are straight principals with lapped and pegged collars, probably late C18/eariy C19. However, the ridge at the right hand end of the house (probably the lower end and hall) is smoke-blackened and dates from the original roof structure, which has otherwise been completely replaced, showing that the house was originally at least partially open to the roof. To include cob wall with thatched roof adjoining to south-west end of house extending as far as the linhay (q.v.). Although only a few early internal features are preserved in this house it has not been spoilt by late C20 over-modernisation and still preserves an attractive traditional exterior with 2 early windows.
