4/23 Whiteheads 07/02/52 GV II

Former farmhouse. C15 or earlier and late C16. Timber framed and plastered with pegtile roof, hipped at both ends. Off-centre red brick stack of 'concertina' shafts and plaster panel with painted initials 'J.S. 1560' and smaller stack through northern hipped end. Front has off-centre gabled porch and C20 hardwood casements with leaded lights. Large, 2 storey C20 extension on north east corner, with gabled pegtile roof, red brickwork and exposed framing. This is constructed of timbers from a fire damaged barn, formerly standing closer to the road frontage. Internally the frame is exposed revealing crosswings at each end, each with a single brace to the tie beam and mortices for queen post roofs. The centre block is a late C16 rebuilding with integral floor and heavy arch braces to the tie beam. The stack forms a 'baffle entry' arrangement and has a large inglenook to the 'hall' and oven in its western face. Moated site. RCHM 11.
