Details
OTTERTON BELL STREET, Otterton SY 0885 7/121 The Wombles - - II Cottage. C17, thoroughly modernised circa 1980. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; cob or stone rubble stack topped with late C19 brick and Rolle estate chimney pots; thatch roof, tile or outshots. L-shaped house originally facing south but now facing west. The south-facing block was a 2-room plan cottage with a right end stack. Now the 2 rooms have been knocked together. 1-room plan block built at right angles to rear of left room may be an extension. It now houses the circa 1980 stairs and kitchen. Outshot on the end. Circa 1980 entrance moved from south to west side. 2 storeys. South front has irregular 2-window front of C19 and C20 replacement casements with glazing bars and at the left end is the recess of the original blocked doorway. Roof gable-ended to left and half-hipped to right. On the west front is C20 front door with a contemporary canted bay window to right. Thatch roof over over bay is carried across to form roof of porch. Other windows this side are C20 casements with glazing bars and roof is gable-ended. Interior. Only the former south-facing 2-room block contains C17 carpentry detail. Both former rooms have an axial beam; the right one is soffit-chamfered with scroll stops, the left one is a circa 1980 replacement. 2-bay roof but truss is boxed in. However the purlins look as through they are C17 and the right end hip cruck indicates a strong likelihood that they are. Roof space inaccessible. No carpentry detail exposed in rear block.
