COLATON RALEIGH
HAWKERLAND ROAD, Colaton Raleigh
Hardys Farmhouse

II

House, former farmhouse. Early C19. Plastered cob and stone rubble; stone rubble
or brick stacks topped C19 brick; slate roof.
3-room plan house facing south-west. The right end (south-eastern) room is set back
a little from the main front, probably because of the symmetrical section to left.
The entrance hall and stair lies between the other 2 rooms. End rooms have end
stacks and centre room has an outer axial stack. 2 storeys.
Overall 5-window front. The left 3-window section, the part projecting forward
slightly is symmetrical with ground floor 30-pane (15/15) sashes and, on the first
floor, outer 25-pane (10/15) sashes and a central 20-pane (8/12) sash. This section
has a central doorway, a central 4-panel door behind a porch with hipped slate roof
on timber posts with chamfered edges, block caps and shaped brackets. The right-
hand section has another ground floor 30-pane sash and 2 more first floor 25-pane
sashes. Projecting eaves on shaped brackets. Roof is hipped each end.
Interior preserves much original joinery.
It is most unusual in Devon to find a farmhouse with its C19 fenestration intact and
the sashes here are unusual.
