Details
SOWTON SIDMOUTH ROAD SX 99 SE 1/44 Linden Lee -
- II
Detached cottage. Between 1800 and 1837 (dates of O.S.map and tithe map). Roughcast cob on stone footings; thatched roof, half-hipped to left, gabled-end to right. 2-room cottage, the central entrance giving in to the right-hand room which is heated by an external end stack, with off-set and brick shaft. 2 storeys. Front: symmetrical 2-window range; 2-light casement windows throughout, C19, with 6 panes per light. Wide central doorway. C20 single-storeyed extension to right with pantiled roof, contains bathroom and storage. C20 window to left-hand gable wall. Interior: roof, with 3 trusses; the principals are straight, and although the apex carpentry is not visible, it is understood to be crossed and bolted. Linden Lee is an interesting example of a type of house plan and structure that remained almost unchanged from the C17 to C19 : 'It demonstrates that traditional methods and designs were still in use (in the C19) for the smallest houses', N W Alcock, 'Houses in an East Devon Parish', Trans. Devon Assoc., 94 (1962), p.215.
