Details
UPTON PYNE SX 89 NE 2/49 Little Nettacott - - II House, formerly a farmhouse. C17. Rendered cob on stone plinth with hipped thatched roof. Formerly a 3-unit, cross-passage plan, but much altered, with a C20 extension to the left-hand side which probably marks the site of one of the 3 original rooms. The front elevation has irregular fenestration. excluding the C20 extension, there are 3 to both storeys, the middle ground floor window marking the position of the original entrance. All casements are C20. The present entrance is at the extreme right-hand end of the building, set between two stone buttresses. There are 2 axial stacks, one to the right and backing onto the former through-passage, the other marking the division between the middle room and C20 extension. The back elevation consists of 3 irregularly-placed windows, of which one is at first-floor level. Internally the right-hand room contains a single- chamfered beam and a large fireplace with a wooden lintel and Thorverton stone jambs, all with ovolo mouldings. The left-hand room also contains a chamfered main beam and, dividing it from the C20 room, a massive trunk beam set at door lintel level. The fireplace has been removed. Above the extant fireplace, but set slightly to one side, is a first floor fireplace with chamfered lintel and jambs. The roof is of 5-bays, with principal rafters (possibly jointed crucks) and a closed hip cruck at the right-hand end. Some rafters show evidence of soot- blackening.
