Details

UPTON PYNE COWLEY SX 99 NW 3/62 Cowley Manor - - II Large house, now 3 dwellings, remodelled and extended in C18 and C19. 2 major blocks lie parallel to each other on a SW/NE axis. The southernmost (and older) of these is of Thorverton stone, the latter in rendered stone, and they are linked by a small unrendered stone wing that is not bonded into either. A further C19 wing extends to the N. 2 storeys throughout. Slate, gable end roofs. The older block has an end stack (to left), and a back, lateral stack (which now emerges from a C20 porch). Front windows and door, although altered, reveal original 3-unit plan. To the left of the doorway (which is itself left of centre) are one window to each floor with 6-pane casements; the middle room has one 4-pane casement to each floor; the right-hand room (probably the former parlour) has an early C19 12-pane casement above another window which has been converted into a garden door. Gable end to right displays post-1850 canted bay at ground level, 2-light 12-pane sashes above and a C20 attic window. The other block lying parallel to that just described has an axial stack and 2 modern brick chimneys, C19 fenestration and early C19 heavy quoining. Interior (not inspected): the former parlour (right-hand end room) of the older block contains nice early C19 internal shutters, parallelled door and moulded cornice, and a large Thorverton stone C16 fireplace with a 4-centred segmented arch and ovolo moulding.
