GV II
Large detached house, formerly Clyst St George Rectory. Early C19 with later-C19 extension. Brick throughout, in Flemish bond. Slate gabled-end roofs. L-shaped plan: the earlier range is a single-depth plan, the staircase positioned centrally but to the rear, and serving both this and the later rear double-depth range. Internal end stacks with moulded caps to front range, 1 end and 2 axial stacks to rear wing. 2 storeys. Front: symmetrical 5-window range; heavy coping to gable ends; 12-pane hornless sash windows with external shutters to 1st floor; 2-pane horned sash windows to ground floor with central French window. All windows with keystone. 3 gabled dormers with 6-pane dash windows. The roof ridge line is broken left of centre at its junction with the higher rear wing ridge line. Right and left hand end gable walls with window; the right-hand end has a late-C20 ground-floor window in addition. The C19 rear wing is set well back and the right- hand (south) front faces the church and is treated as a significant facade : 4- window range, each window bay with separately gabled dormer windows with horned sashes; the left-hand bay projects with 2 set-offs and a lean-to porch with 2 chamfered stone arches; 2-pane horned sash windows under hoodmoulds to 1st floor, that above the porch with leaded coloured glass; 1, 2 and 3-light sash windows to ground-floor, all with hood moulds. Left-hand elevation asymmetrical; the rear wing extends beyond the line of the C18 house, and its gable apex is treated with a crenellated open turret. Interior: open well staircase with stick balusters; plain carpentry details; the fireplaces are late-C20 replacements. The Old Rectory stands in extensive grounds and groups well with the parish church. Many of the outbuildings, including the stables, were destroyed by an incendiary bomb in 1940.
