KENTON EAST TOWN, Kenton SX 98 SE

6/222 Peacock Cottage 30.6.61

GV II

Cottage, probably originally the lower end of Trelawn (q,v.). C17 with C19 and C20 alterations. Colourwashed rendered cob and stone with some brick; thatched roof, gabled at ends ; lateral stack to front block, (left end stack to rear block dismantled). Plan: The one room plan rear block is said to have been continuous with Trelawn in the late 1940s and the scale of the fireplace indicates that it may have been was the lower end kitchen of a C17 or earlier house. The front block is also one room on plan but roofed at right angles to the rear block and was presumably a service wing, some of the wall construction is brick and it may be C18. The main entrance is into the front block in the gable end, a second entrance into the rear block is evidently C20 and post dates the truncation of the house. Exterior: 2 storeys. 1 window front, gable ended, with a plank front door under a C20 lean-to porch on posts ; C20 ground floor timber casement. The right return has 2 first floor and 1 ground floor C20 casements and a C20 doorway into the gable end of the rear block. Interior: Impressive late C16 or C17 fireplace in the rear block with a chamfered step-stopped lintel, stone jambs and a bread oven. Both ground floor rooms have chamfered crossbeams of an C18 character ; the front room has a plain C19 chimneypiece. Roof: Apex not inspected but principal rafters visible upstairs are straight. Forms part of an attractive thatched group in East Town behind a C20 housing estate, formerly on the main road through Kenton.
