EAST TOWN, Kenton
Trelawn

II
House, formerly one property with Peacock Cottage (q.v.) C17 or earlier origins,
refurbishment of circa 1820. Colourwashed rendered cob ; thatched roof, gabled at
ends ; left end stack, rear left lateral stack, both with brick shafts.
Plan: Originally part of the higher end of a large C17 or earlier house, Peacock
Cottage being the lower end and the hall, in the middle, a separate cottage. In the
1950s the middle cottage was demolished. Trelawn is L plan and single depth with an
entrance into an early C19 stair hall to the left and a principal room to the right.
The front right service wing is partly weatherboarded and was probably an C18 barn
subsequently re-used as unheated service rooms and a carpenter's shop.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Narrow one window front with a C20 front door with a tiled
porch on posts and first floor C19 16-pane sash. The inner return (the wing) has 1
ground floor and 1 first floor 2-light small pane timber casement ; beyond this bay
the wing is weatherboarded with 2 1-light first floor windows (replacing loft loading
doors) and a 3-light window at the right, with a C20 timber ground floor window.
The right return of the main block has C19 sash windows and a flight of steps to the
wing gives access to the loft of the former barn. The rear elevation of the main
block has timber casements and an early C19 French window with glazing bars.
Interior: Detail largely of the 1820s : a stick baluster dog-leg stair with a turned
newel post ; the principal room has good early C19 panelled doors with reeded
doorcases with rosettes, 2 segmental arched recesses on the right end wall flanking
the chimneypiece, also with reeded surrounds and rosettes and a chimneypiece that
retains a mantel shelf on decorated brackets.
Roof: Main block not inspected. Pegged collar rafter trusses in the former barn with
collars halved and pegged on to the principals are probably C18.
Part of a group of 3 thatched houses behind the new estate in East Town, formerly on
the main road through Kenton.
