GV II
Former rectory. Rebuilt 1812 by Robert Cornish of Exeter (D.R.O.) Whitewashed and rendered, the main block probably stone or stone and cob, the service wing brick; axial stacks with rendered shaft; slate roof, hipped at ends of main block and to front of wing, gabled to rear of wing. Plan: Double depth plan to main block, 2-rooms wide with a direct entrance into a heated hall containing the stair, parlour to the right, large principal room to rear right, dining room to rear left. The service wing, sited at right angles to the main block and adjoining at the left, is 1-room on plan. The change of walling material suggests that there may be 2 building phases to the house. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2:3 bay front, the service wing set back at the left with an outshut to the front. The 3-bay main block is symmetrical with a C20 panelled front door with C19 panelled reveals and a moulded doorcase with a cornice; 12-pane sash windows, the 2 right hand windows C20 copies , blind window to first floor right. 16-pane first floor sashes to the service wing at the left; 12-pane sash to left return of main block. The right return of the main block has a 2-storey bow to the right with C19 tripartite sashes, 6 over 9 panes in the centre flanked by 2 over 3 pane windows on the ground floor; a 12-pane sash in the centre flanked by 4- pane sashes to the first floor. To the left of the bow, two 12-pane sashes. The garden elevation has a C20 French window to the left, one 16-pane sash to the ground floor and two 12-pane first floor windows (C19) and one small C20 inserted window. The wing, to the right, has 2-light C19 or C20 first floor casements and ground floor 16-pane sash with a C20 window ground floor left. Interior: The stair hall preserves a C19 marble chimney-piece and stick baluster stair with a turned newel, open string and ramped handrail. The large principal room has a pretty C19 plaster cornice and replaced chimney-piece. An attractive early C19 vicarage Devon Nineteenth Century Churches project.
