House, said to have been dower house to Powderham Castle. C18 with early C19 alterations. Whitewashed and stuccoed, said to be framed with brick infill; 2 span slate roof, behind a parapet; end stacks. Plan: Double depth plan, 2 rooms wide with a central entrance into a passage containing the stair. All four ground floor rooms have good plaster cornices and it is not clear where the original kitchen was, possibly in the basement. A single- storey rear left lean-to is probably a later addition. Exterior: 3 storey and basement. Symmetrical 3-bay front with high quality detail and original windows. Rusticated plinth, deep cornice below parapet with a dentil frieze, carried out round the 3 storey canted bays to left and right. White steps up to a central panelled front door with a semi-circular fanlight with wrought iron decoration including the initials H and C for Courtenay. Good doorcase with Roman Ionic columns supporting a pediment above a cornice with a dentil frieze. 12-pane sash above front door with a pediment and eared shouldered architraves; 6 over 3 sash in the centre of the second floor. The canted bays have cornices and 12-pane sashes. The rear elevation also has C18 sash windows, paired to the left and right. Interior: Plaster cornices to the ground floor, good C18 stair with an open string with turned balusters. The front left room has an extremely fine scagliola chimneypiece, said to have originated at Powderham Castle, with flanking niches with dentil cornices.
