House. Probably a late C18 remodelling of a C17 house ; C20 rear right wing ; 1980s
renovations. Colourwashed plastered cob on stone rubble footings ; thatched roof
with plain ridge hipped at ends and carried down as a catslide to a right end lean-
to; truncated left end stack, rear lateral stack to main block, now enclosed by rear
wing, right end stack dismantled.
Plan: Single depth main block, 3 rooms wide, with an entrance to left of centre into
a passage containing the stair. The right end room is divided into 2 by a thin wall
; right-hand section under lean-to roof, left-hand section with winder stair with
straight flight. Evidence of rebuilding on front right corner (information from
owner).
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front with regular fenestration. C20
gabled porch to left of centre. 3 first floor late C18 and C19 2-light casements
with 6-panes per light, 3 similar ground floor casements with 2, later 1-light 8-pane
windows.
Interior: C18 joinery survives including 2-panel doors on the first floor : the stick
baluster stair with a turned newel post could be late C18 or early C19. Fireplaces
rebuilt.
Roof: Probably late C18 pegged collar rafter roof trusses with vertical posts below
the collars which are butted on to the principals : considerable re-use of timbers,
some principals are re-used ceiling beams and there are some sooted rafters, probably
from a medieval roof, re-used as battens to the left end hip.
Rest Dod was the vicarage before 1840 when Oakford was built.
The house stands high above the road and is in a prominent position in the village.
