BISHOPSTEIGNTON FORE STREET, (north side), SX 9073-9173 Bishopsteignton 13/40 No 2 (The Ring of Bells) including iron railings in front

Public house. Early C19. Whitewashed and stuccoed, probably stone rubble ; slate roof, gabled at ends ; left end stack with brick shaft. Plan: Double-depth main range with a 2-span roof, 2 rooms wide with principal rooms at the front. An adjoining block at the right end has an oblique angle on the corner of Fore Street and Radway Hill. Exterior: 2 storeys. The main block has a symmetrical 3-bay front with a slated verandah on posts with solid end walls with round-headed niches, a local feature. The original front door in the centre has been replaced by a C20 sash, French windows with glazing bars and margin panes to left and right ; 16-pane outer sashes to first floor, 12-pane sash in centre. The adjoining block at the right end has 1 12-pane sash and blocked window, flat-roofed single-storey C20 addition on front. The right return, facing on to Radway Hill, has 12-pane sashes. Interior: not inspected. A low wall in front of the building with iron railings with fleur de lis finials is included in the listing. Similar to Cross Gate (q.v.) to the south.
