9/19 Ashwell House and outbuilding - adjoining at west

II

Former farmhouse. C18, probably a thorough remodelling of an earlier house (evidence of fire damage). Whitewashed rendered cob and stone ; thatched roof with plain ridge, hipped at left end, gabled at right end ; projecting right end stack with set- offs, rear left lateral stack, truncated right end stack to lean-to. Plan: single depth main range with 2 principal rooms at the front, one on either side of a stair hall, narrow service room in a probably later rear left outshut, the outshut raised to 2-storeys at the centre and right. An outbuilding under the same roofline adjoins at the left end. Charred carpentry on the ground floor suggests severe fire damage and the present plan form may be the result of remodelling a C17 or earlier house. Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-window front with regular fenestration, central gabled porch of the C20 with a C20 plank front door. Attractive set of C19 casements with glazing bars, 3-lights casement to ground floor right, the others 2-light, first floor left a C20 replacement with larger panes. The outbuilding at the left end has a doorway on the front. Interior: No exposed carpentry, C20 fireplaces possibly concealing earlier features. The crosswall dividing the house from the outbuiding does not appear to be tied in to the masonry of the front and rear walls and has wattle and daub infill in the gable. Roof: No access to apex at time of survey (1987) but the timbers visible in the outbuilding appear to be C18 and principal rafters visible on the first floor of the house are straight, suggesting a post C17 date. An attractive traditional house with an unspoiled exterior.
