Details
THE ESPLANADE 1. 1633 Bedford Hotel SY 1287 1/70 12.10.51. II* GV 2. Circa 1810 west front originally John Wallis's Library and Reading Rooms, a fashionable meeting-place of the time. Enlarged between 1815 and 1840 with later additions to Esplanade front, 3 storeys stucco faced, the top floor added later. Low pitch hipped slate roof, overhanging eaves. Esplanade front. 3 windows to original part, modern casements on later 2nd floor which has bracketed iron balcony with supports carried up to eaves. 3 windows 1st floor, outer ones sash with central French windows, drip moulds over giving onto crenellated terrace. Ground floor built out and glazed. Stepped projecting bays to east have 2-light mullioned and transomed windows with drip moulds over. The 1st floor of the eastern- most bay has a tent-roofed trellis balcony, probably a modern replacement. The west front has a very good stucco faced 3-window elevation. The 2nd floor has 3 low casements. 1st floor has French windows and balconies with tent-shaped canopies (restored). The central window is a canted bay with the balcony eturned round it.
The Bedford Hotel forms a group with the Sussex Hotel, Station Road.
