4/34 Nos. 1 and 2 Yucca Cottages - II
2 cottages, probably originally one house. Late C17 with some late C20 renovations. Whitewashed rendered cob on stone footings; thatched roof with a plain ridge, hipped at the left end, gabled at the right end; axial stack and end stacks. Plan: The main range, facing the road, is a single-depth plan, probably 3 rooms and a through passage. Only No. 2 was inspected internally at time of survey (1987) but this appears to be the lower end, passage and hall of a 3 room plan house. No 1 is presumably the inner room. The hall stack does not back on to the passage. No.2 has a rear wing at right angles, probably originally an open-fronted implement shed converted to a kitchen; a rear outshut and a single-storey outbuilding with a tiled roof. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 + 3 window front. No. 2 has a C20 gabled porch to the former passage with lattice sides, a C19 or C20 plank front door and 3 first floor C19 or C20 timber casements with glazing bars; 2 similar ground floor windows. The left hand cottage (No. 1) has a C20 gabled porch in the centre, a C19 or C20 plank front door and C20 metal framed casements. Interior: No. 2 inspected. The ground floor rooms have chamfered crossbeams with scroll stops, C20 stone fireplace to the left hand room, open fireplace to the right hand room (largely rebuilt) with a timber lintel. A C20 stair has been introduced into the through passage. C18 panelled door into left hand room. Roof: Apex not inspected. Principal rafters visible upstairs suggest a late C17 or C18 date. A traditional thatched house on a prominent roadside site.
