4/61 Western Cottage and cottage 7.12.62 adjoining at the west
GV II
2 adjoining houses, probably originally one build. Late medieval origins, probably remodelled in the C17. C20 renovations. Whitewashed and rendered, probably cob on stone rubble footings; thatched roof, with plain ridge, gabled at ends; axial stack and right end stack. Plan: Single depth plan, probably 3 rooms wide, perhaps a cross or through passage plan, lower end to the right. Details of plan unclear on survey as interior not inspected but a medieval hall window, presumably re-sited but said to originate in the house, survives on the front wall. It is likely that a medieval roof structure survives. A rectangular front left projection may be a stair projection or perhaps a smoking chamber:- there is a bread oven projection on the left end. A change in plane of the front elevation at the right end suggests that the house may have been extended or rebuilt. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front, C20 recessed front door to the right of the left hand house, front door to right hand house on right return. 2- and 3-light casements C19 or C20 with glazing bars except for the window to the left of the front door: this is a 4-light timber medieval hall window with cusped lights. Interior: Not inspected but very likely to be of interest and a medieval roof may well survive.
