WHIMPLE THE SQUARE, SY 0497-0597 10/229 Hughes Chest tomb approximately 6 - metres south-south-west of the tower of the Church of St Mary GV II

Chest tomb. Dated 1872 in memory Mary and William Hughes. Bathstone ashlar. Chest tomb in Tudor Gothic style. Rectangular in plan on moulded plinth and lid has moulded edges and low pitched ridge. Clasping pilasters on the corner have trefoil- headed panels and eacn side contains a Tudor arch panel. Inscription on north panel in Gothic lettering records the deatns of Mary Hughes in 1872 and her husband William, a general, in 1897.
