GV II
Gentleman's villa. Probably an early C19 refurbishment of an C18 house with some alterations of the circa late 1960/early 1970s. Colourwashed rendered stone with Beerstone quoins (the quoins rendered-over); slate roof, gabled at ends; end stacks and an axial stack, all with rendered shafts. One of a group of C18 and C19 villas on the outskirts of Honiton, in the south-east corner of Awliscombe parish. Plan: L plan. Principal rooms in a south-facing main range, rear left (north-west) service wing at right angles. The main entrance (which was moved circa late 1960s early 1970s) is on the right (east) end into an axial passage to the rear containing the staircase. The principal rooms are a library (possibly originally the dining room) at the left (west) end; a south-facing drawing room in the centre and a smaller room to the east (right). This was originally the entrance hall with the front door set forward (south) of its present position. The partition between the former entrance hall and the drawing room was removed when the entrance was moved. The service wing contains the kitchen and unheated service rooms. Judging from the 2- panel doors on the first floor the origins of the house are C18, although this may represent the common use of slightly old-fashioned joinery upstairs. Ground floor features appear to be 1830s, which may be the date of the canted bay to the centre front. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-bay south (garden) front, the centre bay 2 storeys and canted with moulded cornices to both the ground and first floor. The bay has probably early C19 paired sashes in the centre, 12-pane to the first floor, 6 over 9 to the ground floor, with single sashes to the returns, 12-pane to the first floor, 4 over 6 to the ground floor. Tripartite early C19 sashes to the left and right bays, 12-pane in the centre on the first floor, 8-pane in the centre on the ground floor. The right return has a circa late 1960s/early 1970s Georgian style doorcase and a C20 front door. The rear wing has a mixture of early C19 sashes with glazing bars and C19 and early C20 small-pane timber casements. The service wing has an open bellcote with a bell and weathervane, probably early C19. Interior: The ground floor retains a number of good early C19 features : panelled doors, marble chimney-pieces and a stick baluster stair with a mahogany handrail. The first floor has a set of probably C18 2-pane doors (2 of these also survive on the ground floor of the service wing) and 2 early C19 chimney-pieces complete with iron grates. The real (north) end of the service wing is roofed on a west/east axis: it has very thick walls and may be a pre C18 agricultural building which has been absorbed into the house. A handsome villa with interior features of interest. Group value with a cluster of detached villas set in the woodland in the south-east corner of the parish.
