TALATON FAIRMILE SY 09 NE 6/179 Mill Farm 21.8.78 GV II

Farmhouse. Mid - late C17, modernised in C19 and again circa 1980. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; stone rubble and brick stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof. Plan: farmhouse is set below the lane facing north-east. It has a 2-room plan, one either side of a central through-passage which contains the main stair. Both rooms have end stacks but the right one appears to be a late C19 insertion. 2 storeys with secondary lean-to outshots to rear and circa 1980 extension on the left end. Exterior: main house has a symmetrical 3-window front of late C19 3-light casements with glazing bars arranged about a central front doorway which contains a late C19 part-glazed 6-panel door under a contemporary hood on shaped brackets. Roof is half-hipped both ends. Interior: is largely the result of the late C19 modernisation. The left room fireplace is blocked. However the ceiling beams of both rooms are C17. Both are chamfered with scroll stops, the left one is axial, the other a crossbeam. Roof not inspected.
