Details
PAYHEMBURY ST 00 SE 3/112 Payhembury School - GV II
School. Dated 1851, extended in the late C19. Local stone rubble, the original school is faced with snecked grey limestone ashlar; sandstone ashlar detail; stone rubble stack topped with C19 and C20 brick; slate roof. Plan: school faces south-east. It is set back from the road set high on a terrace. It has a 3 or 4-room plan. The right half is the original section and has a central front porch and rear lateral stack. The right-hand addition continues the same roofline and is a plainer Tudor Gothic style than the original. Single storey. Exterior: the original school has a symmetrical 2-window front, a stone-mullioned 3-light window with hoodmould either side of a gabled porch. Front window of the porch is arch-headed with stone Y-tracery. Above is a plaque with a Gothic inscription; "Payhembury National School, 1851". Plain door in right side. Extension has an irregular 2-window front of plain stone-mullioned windows, the larger right one has a gable over containing a small oculus. Roof is gable-ended. Interior: not inspected.
