GV II

Cottage. Mid C19, probably an C18 core. Plastered stone rubble with sections of cob; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 brick; slate roof. Plan: the cottage faces south-west. It is double depth. The front originally had 2 rooms, one each side of a central passage through to the rear stair and service rooms. Now the front end stacks are disused and the partitions between the rooms have been removed. The room to rear of the right room, probably the kitchen, has an end stack and the stairs rise to rear of the left end. 2 storeys with C20 service outshots to rear. Rose Cottage has been enlarged. It has expanded into the adjoining cottage which is listed separately, Charwood (q.v) Exterior: symmetrical 2-window front of mid C19 casements containing an attractive margin pane pattern of glazing bars. The central doorway has been blocked with a smaller window in the same style. To right the main roof is continuous over adjoining Charwood (q.v) and to left it is gable-ended. The C20 doorway is through the rear end of this wall. Interior: is largely the result of the C19 and C20 modernisations. The only feature exposed maybe earlier than the C19 is the rear kitchen fireplace which has plastered sides and a roughly-finished oak lintel. The roof is mid C19 but a good piece of craftmanship; A-frame trusses with spiked lap-jointed collars and plate yokes. The timbers are marked with carpenter's assembly marks. Is this as late as the mid C19? Rose Cottage forms a group with other listed buildings in the vicinity of the Church of St Mary (q.v). A number of houses in the area have these attractive and locally distinct C19 windows.
