CLYST HYDON AUNK ST 00 SE 3/14 Ratclyffe - GV II
Small mansion. Circa 1830. The walls are stuccoed but probably stone rubble and brick; brick stacks with plastered chimneyshafts; slate roof. Plan: the main block faces east and has a double depth plan, a main front and back room either side of the central entrance hall and stair. On the left (north) end are 2 parallel service ranges, the first is set back a little from the train block and the second is set back from the front end of the first. The first one also projects behind the back of the main block. Most of the rooms throughout the house are heated by a series of axial stacks. 2 storeys. Exterior: the main block has a symmetrical 3-window front. The centre bay breaks forward very slightly and it contains the main doorway. This contains a large 6- panel door with a reeded doorcase, an overlight containing a geometric pattern of glazing bars and panelled reveals. It has a large flat-roofed Tuscan porch on stone steps; it has a moulded entablature and is supported on pairs of columns. The windows either side are 20-pane (8/12) sashes and the first floor windows are 16- pane sashes. There is a stucco flat platband across the front at first floor level. The deep eaves are carried on pairs of shaped brackets and the roof is hipped both ends. The right (south) end is the garden front and it has a 4-window front 16-pane sashes. The service blocks include 16 and 12-pane sashes and C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars. The outer service block has a timber bellcote on the ridge of the roof. Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey but is said to contain a great deal of original joinery and other detail.
