CLYST ST LAWRENCE SY 09 NW 5/46 Walkeys Cottage 30.6.61 GV II
Cottage. Late C18 - early C19, probably late C17 - early C18 origins. Modernised in 1987. Plastered stone rubble; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 brick; thatch roof. Plan: 3-room plan cottage facing north. There is a parlour at the left (east) end and a kitchen at the right end, both served by gable-end stacks. The doorway probably once led into a passage but now enters the kitchen. There is an unheated central service room. Although the cottage appears to be late C18 - early C19 the layout suggests a late C17 - early C18 central service room plan house. 2 storeys. Exterior: regular but not symmetrical 3-window front of C20 replacement casements; all round heads and the first floor ones have thatch eyebrows over. The front doorway is right of centre; it has a round-headed arch containing a late C18 - early C19 plank door. The gabled slate-roofed porch was built in 1987; it has a round- headed arch containing a plank door in imitation of the original behind. The main roof is gable-ended. Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey but some plain late C18 - early C19 carpentry detail was seen. The kitchen fireplace is stone rubble with an oak lintel and contains an oven; it may be earlier.
