Details
LUPPITT ST 10 SE 10/67 - Woodhayes Cottage - II Cottage, once 2 or 3 cottages. Late C17 with C18 and C19 additions and alterations. Plastered local stone rubble with some cob; stone rubble stacks topped with plastered brick chimneyshafts; thatch roof. Plan: 4-room plan cottage built down the hillslope facing south-west. The larger central rooms are heated by axial stacks backing onto the end rooms. The oldest section of the house is the room right (south-east) of centre which may have been a late C17 1-room plan cottage. The other rooms are C18 and C19 additions. The right 2 rooms are 2 storeys. The left 2 are single storey. Exterior: irregular front fenestration with 5 ground floor windows and 2 first floor windows. The left first floor window is probably C18 and contains rectangular panes of leaded glass; the rest are various C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars. The front doorway is right of centre and it contains a C20 plank door under a contemporary thatch hood The roof is hipped to left and half-hipped to right. Interior: the late C17 section has a large stone rubble fireplace with an oak- framed front. The crossbeam here has deep chamfers and step stops but has been cut through at the front for the present main stair. The roof over this section was not inspected but the scantling of the bases of straight principals which show on the first floor are large enough to suggest that they belong to original A-frame trusses. No exposed carpentry elsewhere in the house.
