Details
LUPPITT BEACON ST 10 NE 6/71 Wrens - GV II House, probably 2 cottages originally. Late C18 - early C19, probably earlier origins, renovated and modernised more than once in the C20. Plastered local stone rubble; stone rubble stacks with plastered brick chimneyshafts; thatch roof. Plan: 4-room plan house built across the hillslope facing south-west. At the right (south-east) end is a parlour with a rear lateral stack. Next to it is the entrance hall with the stairs behind and a 2-storey porch in front. Left of centre is the former kitchen with an axial stack backing onto the unheated left end room. The house was probably built as a pair of 2-room plan cottages. The porch was added when the cottages were united. House is 2 storeys with an outshot on the left end which was brought into domestic use circa 1970. Exterior: nearly symmetrical 2:1:2 - window of various casement windows. Most are C20 and some have no glazing bars but 3 of the first floor windows are C19 (maybe original) casements containing rectangular panes of leaded glass. The porch is gabled. The roof is half-hipped to right and hipped to left where it is carried own over the outshot. Interior: is largely the result of C19 and C20 modernisations. The ground floor beams are all C20 replacements, the right room (parlour) fireplace has been rebuilt using sections of old beams and the left (kitchen) fireplace is altered although it is apparent that it once had an oak-framed front. The roof was not inspected although the bases of straight principals were seen on the first floor. Wrens forms part of a group of attractive buildings which make up the hamlet of Beacon.
