SX 99 NE BROADCLYST NEWBUILDINGS, Broadclyst 9/120 Nos.27-29 - including Post Office

GV II

Block of houses, 1870-1. Rendered red sandstone under gabled-end roof with red tiles; unrendered sandstone rear extensions containing workshops and privies. 2 storeys with attics, and axial stacks with brick shafts. This group (with no. 30) is brought forward to stand directly adjacent to the road which here curves round to the village centre. Right-hand cross wing (gabled-ended) and end gable of 3 storeys, 2-light casement windows above, large sash windows to ground floor; left- hand range of 2 storeys, with 2-light windows above, and a 3-light casement window below. 3 doors, one now converted into a 2-light window. A right-hand leanto serves as Broadclyst Post Office, slated roof, and gabled side window. Part of a long sequence of 8 blocks of houses built to replace dwellings on the same site destroyed in the Broadclyst fire of 1870. The houses are construed as a group and have basic features in common, although they are at the same time carefully varied from unit to unit.
