6/15 Gateshayes Farmhouse -

GV II

Farmhouse. Late C18 or early C19. Cob, on stone plinth, rendered, with hipped wheat reed thatched roof. Axial stack to right-hand end and a right-hand internal end stack. 2 storeys. Single depth plan with continuous rear outshut. Front: symmetrical 5-window range with pilaster quoins, the central bay brought out very slightly; central portico, with slate floor, heavily moulded cornice supported by 2 large, round renewed columns, and Doric pilasters. Doorway with fluted architrave and reveals, the door itself with glazed panels above, plain timber panels below. Good set of original windows presumed to be original: ground floor windows all of 2 lights with timber casements, 3 panes to each light, the topmost panes segmentally pointed, with margin panes; the first floor windows, 2-light, timber casements as ground, but square-headed. Right-hand end of house contains 2 windows, one 3-light timber casement with 6 leaded panes to each light, the other (to outshut), 2-light horizontally-sliding sash window, 12 leaded panes to each light. Interior: fielded panelled internal shutters and some early C19 polished limestone and timber fire surrounds. Spacious hall and stairwell. Good 7-bay roof (plus 2 hip bays), principals, tie beam, collar halved and side pegged, through purlins and diagonal ridgepiece.
