SX 99 NE BROADCLYST 5/49 Sprydon House - (formerly listed as Sprydoncote) 11.11.52 GV II

Large house set in parkland. Late C18 with mid-C19 internal remodelling. Stuccoed, on volcanic trap moulded plinth, under hipped slate roof with brick stacks. Central staircase plan, formerly with 2 rear wings now partially dismantled. 2 storeys. Front: 5 bays, rusticated quoins, and cornice with modillions and parapet to front only; all windows with hornless sash windows with blind housings (those to 1st floor on little brackets). Central doorway without portico, glazed double doors, 6 panes to each door, under semi-circular fanlight. Left-hand elevation of 3 bays, all windows (except that above the porch) blocked, but retaining their sashes; porch approached by a curved open verandah under slated roof, C19. No window to right- hand end of main range but 2 sash windows to each floor of wing, horned above, without horns below. Interior: considerably altered in mid-C19, but original internal panelled shutters remain, along with dog-leg staircase, moulded balusters and turned handrail with 12 pane semi-circular headed stairwell window at head. Sprydon House was formerly known as Sprydon Cote.
