8.5.67 Old Church House (formerly included as Church House in High Street) GV II

House. Dated 1612. Large stone rubble house with gable end to road. Slate roof with moulded stone coping to gable ends with stone finials. Three storeys. Front to street first and second floor five light ground floor four light moulded stone mullion windows with leaded panes. Moulded stone labels and cills the width of the house. The dripmould on the ground floor continues over a moulded doorway to the right with four centred arch. Chimney stack and some moulded mullion windows on west side. North end (rear) two light window with dripmould and stack. Interior: much altered. Three Jacobean style overmantles made up from old material but mostly fake. C17 corbelled stone fireplace. . C18 stone chimneypiece and small chamfered stone fireplace on second floor with cambered timber lintel. Staircase either reconstructed or imported, with heavy balusters, moulded string and massive newels with carved finials of dancing bears. Ceiling beams and some reset panelling and fragments of medieval painted glass and Victorian stained glass.
