2/76 Bernithan Court and adjoining walls to rear yard 18/5/53
GV II*
House. Late C17 (possibly incorporating earlier building). Painted brick, painted stone plinth and dressings, tiled swept roof. Double depth in plan, central entrance and stair well, rear yard enclosed by brick walls attached to north-west and to north-east, further adjoining former service block (qv). Two storeys, cellars and attics, moulded string course, coved cornice, five cross-casement windows with solid frames, central dormer with single small vertical glazing bar sash window flanked by C20 skylights; central entrance with pedimented hood on carved brackets, moulded architrave, 6-panelled door. North-west return: 2-light stone mullioned windows light cellar, central bolection moulded doorway, further 2-light stone mullioned window and two square-headed doorways to rear; well-plan roof with two symmetrically placed chimneys. Interior: retains a significant proportion of contemporary fittings, main framed newel staircase with turned balusters, panelled newels and moulded strings, newels connected by slender columns, further second dog-leg staircase to south-east with similar turned balusters. Decorative plastered ceilings to staircase hall and room to north and north-east with grape, pomegranate and fleur-de-lis enrichments. Room to north-east also contains late C17 panelling and bolection moulded surround to the fireplace; similar fireplace in hall. A fine example of a late C17 gentry house owing something to mid-C17 Thorpe types and similar to Langstone Court (qv). The fine interior suggests a late C17 or c1700 date (of datestone of 1695 on barn qv). Both possibly inspired by Troy House near Monmouth (built for Marquis of Worcester) or the Castle House in Monmouth (also for Lord Worcester) both typical,post- Restoration houses.
