9/163 Barley Knapp Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. Early C17 with later additions and alterations. Rubble, slate and corrugated iron roof. Four-room plan, aligned north/south, 2 central rooms with stack to south and adjoining spiral staircase, early C17; kitchen to south with large stack on gable, late C17; former scullery to north end added mid-C18. West front: 2 storeys and attic; wide entry to right of left room with chamfered and stopped surround; this room has a straight joint to 2 central rooms, 2 raked top dormers above 2 windows, to left a horizontally sliding sash, to right, 2-light casement; stack straight jointed to last and to right (south) room, which has entrance to left, ledged door with strap hinges, to right of which a 2-light casement. Interior: the north wall of the earliest portion is timber-framed with square panels of wattle- and-daub infill. The earliest house was probably timber-framed with rubble stack to gable.
