Details
LITTLE BIRCH CP - SO 53 SW 5/49 New Mills Farmhouse 20,lO.52 GV II Farmhouse. Probably C17 with later alterations. Timber-frame and sandstone rubble with Welsh slate roofs and brick stacks. L-plan with arms extending roughly southwards and eastwards. Cellar, two storeys and attics. West elevation has one 6-pane late C19 window placed centrally below eaves. Beneath is a similar window with nine panes. To its right is a 2-light glazing bar casement beneath which is a segmentally-headed entry with ledged door to the cellar. Large side stack and to the extreme left another 6-pane window beneath which is a small hipped roof projection. Main entry to ground floor is from north side through early C20 gabled porch. South elevation has some exposed framing to right-hand side. Interior has exposed square framing on north side of east/west range with 2-light C18 wrought iron casement enveloped by C19 additions. Kitchen to north-east contains bread oven and copper. Trusses of east/west range have raking struts. North gable of north/south range has unusual pattern of angle struts. (RCHM, Vol I, p 22).
