Dutch barn,1885. Red brick square piers carrying timber roof structure
covered in pantiles. The square piers are arranged in three rows of seven,
including a central colonnade, these with bricks missing throughout the length of
each pier and regularly. The whole structure stands over a pit similar to
that of the silage clamp. The peculiar nature of the central piers, which may
be designed to provide some form of internal ventilation, suggests that this
building may not have been intended as a simple Dutch barn.

The description shall be amended to read:
Dutch barn originally probably silage clamp. 1885. Red brick square piers carrying
timber roof structure covered in pantiles. The square piers are arranged in three
rows of seven, including a central colonnade, these with bricks missing throughout
the length of each pier and regularly. The whole structure stands over a pit
similar to that of the silage clamp (qv). The peculiar nature of the central
piers, which may be designed to provide some form of internal ventilation, suggests
that this building may not have been intended as a simple Dutch barn, but may
have been an earlier and experimental precursor of the silage clamp (qv) close
by. This is one of the earliest tangible survivals of the introduction of the
concept of silage making in England.
The list was previously amended in respect of this entry on 20 May 1987.
