6/24 Barn about 300 yards north of Whitfield
- II
Barn. Probably late C19. Oak, brick and steel with tiled and corrugated iron roofs. Five structural bays aligned roughly north/south. West elevation has mid-C20 lean-to with corrugated iron roof; one loft opening to each gable. Interior has wall-plates supported by eight oak piers resting on octagonal moulded sandstone bases, each pier is square section with an attached half- column to each face, half-columns and piers are linked at the top by necking, plain capitals and part-octagonal abaci. The piers are said to have been recovered from the lowest open stage of the former town hall in High Town, Hereford which was designed c1600, possibly by John Abel, had 27 such piers and was demolished in 1862. This item is included for these piers; the barn itself is not of special architectural interest. Whitfield (qv) is in Treville CP. (BoE, plate 47, which is derived from Clayton, J; A Collection of the Ancient Timber Edifices of England, London 1846, plate 6; model of Hereford Town Hall in Hereford City Museum).
