SO 43 NW MADLEY CP - 4/50 Church Farmhouse and
attached ciderhouse
29.9.52 (formerly listed as
Church Farmhouse) GV II Farmhouse, now house with attached ciderhouse. House is probably early C17
with late C18 extension and late C20 restoration and alterations. Sandstone
rubble plinth, timber-frame with plaster and brick infill, Welsh slate roof,
stone and brick stacks; sandstone rubble bakehouse wing. U-plan, probably
formerly with through-passage, two-bay wings projecting south-eastwards,
ciderhouse attached to south-west and bakehouse wing to rear of north end.
House has cellar and two storeys; south-east elevation has 1:1:1 windows,
3-light mid-C20 casements to gable fronts, centre part has one 4-light and
one 5-light casement to ground floor with a 5-light casement to first floor,
blocked front entry, two rear doorways. Frame has four panels, square and
regular, between cills and wall-plates, angle struts from corner posts to
ties and wall-plates, gables have overlapping parallel struts. Interior
has deeply chamfered beams dividing ceiling of principal ground floor room
into nine regular panels, massive central fireplace with chamfered oak
lintol, ledged C17 or C18 door to first floor room. Ciderhouse is probably
late C18 - early C19; high rubble base occupying whole height of ground storey,
timber-framed first floor with brick infill to front and weatherboards to rear,
Welsh slate roof, four structural bays; two levels; front elevation has three
windows each of two lights, shuttered ground floor opening to right and 2-
leaved doors to left; rear elevation has tallet stairs rising from north-east
to right of ledged door; interior contains complete cider mill and press,
collar trusses with straight braces tied back to wall-posts, end gable to
south-west has struts forming pegged saltire cross above collar (RCHM Vol I,
p 197).
