House. Early C17; altered C18/19. Timber-frame with plaster infil panels; ground floor front wall rebuilt in brick [painted]. Clay plain tile roof with gabled ends and gabled front with pendant and remains of finial. Brick lateral stack at back.
PLAN: 2-room plan with stack at back serving corner fireplaces in each ground and first floor room.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic, 2-bay front with close-studding, jettied at first floor and attic; first floor has 5-light ovolo-moulded mullion-transom windows to right and left with old casements with leaded panes, some with C17 lozenge-shaped panes; broad attic gable jettied out on round-ended joists with 4-light ovolo-moulded window with casements; ground floor under-built in C18 or C19 in brick [painted] with two 3-light casements with glazing bars and C20 panelled door to left of centre.
INTERIOR: Timber-frame largely intact. Exposed wall-framing. Chamfered axial beams without stops and unchamfered exposed joists. Right-hand [S] ground floor room has brick corner fireplace with rounded back. First floor chamber above has smaller brick fireplace with dressed stone lintel and remains of early C17 wall paintings, comprising three painted plaster panels on south wall, continued over timber frame and remains of painted decoration on frame of opposite wall; depicting rural scene with figures harvesting grapes, vines on trellis and animals, including a jumping fox, a coiled snake and birds; possibly scenes from Aesop's Fables or the Bible, or of grape harvesting. C18 fielded 2-panel door between two first floor rooms. 2-bay roof with broad gable at front; collar and tie-beam trusses with V-struts above end collars, centre truss has higher collar with integral door frame below; chamfered tenoned purlins and straight wind-braces, diagonal ridgepiece and common-rafters mostly intact.
A good example of a small early C17 timber-framed town house, containing wall paintings.
