Details

In the entry for:-

SO 97 SW DODFORD WITH GRAFTON ROSE LANE (north side) Dodford

9/101 Priory Cottage

GV II

The description shall be amended to read:-

House. c1848 with mid-to late C19 alterations. Brick with slate roof and ridge end stacks with blue brick caps. Two storeys and cellar with pierced scalloped ironwork to eaves and central gable at front. Three bays; central bay breaks forward slightly and is gabled; outer bays have canted bay window additions on the ground floor with moulded cornices; 3-light first floor windows have shallow pointed-arched lights and dripmoulds on corbels; central bay has oriel window on first floor (also with shallow pointed- arched lights) and a fishscale-tiled roof; central entrance has gabled porch which has fishscale tile banding, moulded pierced bargeboards forming cusped pointed archway, and is supported on large shaped brackets with foliated carving; C19 door with round- headed panels and plain transom light. Trefoil opening in stone triangle in gable apex. Base of wall at S W end is of coursed sandstone blocks, possibly of an earlier building on the site. Interior has central dog-leg staircase with moulded wreathed handrail. Although considerably larger than the other houses on the Dodford Chartist estate the basic plan, proportions, materials and trefoil gable detail of this house suggest that it was also built by the Chartist Land Company and it is marked on a layout of the estate. The houses each had their own small- holding (mainly of four acres) intended to provide the occupant with an independent livelihood and the opportunity to qualify for a county vote. (W Bond, From Hamlet to Parish, 1972).
