- churchyard wall

GV II

War memorial cross. Circa 1920. Smaller version of design of Cross of
Sacrifice by Sir Reginald Blomfield. Portland stone raised on a flint
and brick square pedestal abutted by the churchyard wall of similar
construction. A slender tapering stone cross about 2M high facing N with
a stone sword in relief on the front. Octagonal section upright and
cross arms with flattened domed octagonal finials. Cross has a square
base with concave swept transition to octagonal section. Hollow
chamfered square base with chamfered angles sits on a large inscribed
plinth-block with chamfered angles, and a square stone step on top of
the flint pedestal. Inscription on N side 'TO/THE GLORY OF GOD/AND/IN
MEMORY OF THE MEN OF/THIS PARISH WHO MADE THE/SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE/
GREAT WAR/1914-1918/SO HE PASSED OVER AND ALL THE/TRUMPETS SOUNDED FOR
HIM ON THE/OTHER SIDE'. Added inscription 1939-1945 at back.
