BOVINGDON CHESHAM ROAD TL 00 SW (South side) 6/4 East and South Barns - at Whelpley Ash Farm

GV II

2 barns adjoining at right angles. Mid C17 S barn, later C17 E barn. Timber frames on brick sills, dark weatherboarding with steep red tile roofs. Older S barn of 6 bays with gabled projecting S porch off-centre to W. Jowled posts with long straight braces to tie-beams. Inclined queen-posts support a clasped-purlin in each slope with principal not diminished above notch to house purlin. Collar truss in porch. E barn has 3 narrow bays at N with jowled posts with curved inclined queen-posts in roof and housings for former axial floor beams between the tie-beams. Mortices in posts for a floor structure. A lower floor has been inserted. Bays to S end have unjowled posts. N bay next road largely rebuilt in C19.
