GV II
Wellhouse. 1881. By W. White FSA for Ryder family. Timber frame on red brick plinth with blue brick chamfered offsets. Steep pyramidal shingled roof. A small 5-sided timber structure in Medieval style. Moulded wooden corner piers with curved braces up to eaves - the whole structure open, on an oak sill and chamfered brick plinth. Wooden shingle pyramidal roof with wrought iron finial. Bears the following inscription on wallplate: 'This house with its well dedicated to ye beloved memory/of ye Honble Granville D Ryder, late of Westbrook Hay in this Parish/he was born November 26th AD 1799/and died 24th November 1879/was raised by his relations for/the use and comfort of his friends/ the Villagers of Bovingdon April AD 1881/Let them remember ye waters/that never fail S John IV 14'. The well itself has been covered over. (VCH(1908)216: Roberts(1975)No.30).
