3/11 The Old School House 7.8.73 (formerly listed as Langleybury School)
GV II
Former school, now offices. 1858 with funds provided by W.J. Loyd of Langleybury House (q.v.). Altered and converted 1974. Knapped flint with red brick dressings. Decoratively tiled roof. Gothic Revival Style. 1 storey hall with inserted attic to front. 2 storey house to rear. 6 bays. Entrance to right of centre in steeply gabled porch. Pointed arched door. Brick plinth, quoins. Bargeboards with king posts from collar, pierced trefoils, finial. Small lights in returns. To right two 2-light casements with angled heads, chamfered brick surrounds with shallow pointed heads. To left a similar 3 light window and further left two 2-light windows, as to right. Inserted over outer bags are 2 C20 paired gabled dormers following original details. Ridge tiles. On ridge to left a triangular bellcote, cusped base with spirelet, weathervane. Gable ends have large 3 light mullion and transom windows in pointed arches with tiled tympana. Bargeboards with king posts from collars. To rear left extends a link block with a ground floor 2 bay open fronted lean-to. Gambrel roof on link with an original 3 light hipped dormer. 2 cross axial ridge stacks with panelled shafts, oversailing caps. To rear is former schoolmaster's house, projecting gable end to left, ground floor canted bay, first floor 2 light casement, plain bargeboards. To rear gabled left bay projects slightly, 2 and 3 light casements. Interior not inspected. To rear right extend C20 additions not of special interest.
