15/142 Walls and gates on the N and W sides of Hatfield - House

GV II

Courtyard walls and gates. 1845 and late C19 by the second and third Marquesses of Salisbury. Red brick. Stone dressings. Some terracotta ornament. Pairs of octagonal gate piers on E and W sides near house with cast iron double gates identical to those on the S courtyard. Walling to N of these is late C19, but similar in design to that of S side of house. On N side two sections of wall form 3 wide entrances to courtyard flanked by terracotta ornamental posts with storks and rams' heads motif. A further stretch of similar wall joins the N and S courtyard walls on the W side of the house.
