THE SQUARE 1. 5253 (East side) No 1 _ (Shop premises of Charles Riches and TL 4839 1480:3/41 6.6.52 private house to rear) II GV 2. C18 house. Shop building C19 to corner, lower part in Church Street probably earlier. Tall timber frame plastered house with steep tiled roof. Front lined as ashlar. S flank wall uncovered by demolition in 1981 showed panelled chevron pargetting covered over in C19. 2 storeys above brick base. Symmetrical 5 window front. Flush box sashes with glazing bars. Modillioned eaves cornice. Central 6 panel door. Pilasters support full entablature with Gothic fret in frieze and triangular pediment. Shop building adjacent has 2 storey plastered facade with steep hipped slate roof, overhanging bracketed eaves and deep plain frieze up to canted corner. 3 window 2 storey part in Church Street has similar bracketed eaves to slate roof but lacks frieze. Flush box sash windows with moulded architraves but late C19, 2/2 paned sashes. Continuous C19 shop front with paired pilasters, deep fascia, and paired brackets supporting continuous overhanging cornice. Interesting buildings prominent in street views.
